Prevalence and pattern of electroencephalographic changes associated with clozapine treatment: a cross-sectional study

Abstract Background Clozapine is a second-generation antipsychotic which known to have superior efficacy as compared other antipsychotics. It particularly used in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (10–30%). However, its use limited due the serious side effect of inducing seizures can occur at all doses. The purpose our study was analyse patients taking clozapine for any electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. We undertook cross-sectional on 107 with different diagnosis who visited outdoor treatment facility tertiary care psychiatric diseases hospital Kashmir. A 32-channel digital EEG obtained and evaluated visually abnormalities these patients. data tabulated analysed using SPSS 23.0. Results were reported 60.75% receiving out slow waves epileptiform activities present 48.60% 30.84% patients, respectively. slowing often delta theta ranges. Our showed that there statistically significant relationship between dose Clinical seizure occurred only one patient 450 mg/day smoker had recently stopped smoking. Conclusions frequently clozapine-treated specifically those higher doses clozapine. This calls utilising useful clinical investigation along monitoring especially order hint towards early signs toxicity. Caution needs be taken are smokers show pattern change their smoking habits.
